Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion

Posterior Lumbar Interbody fusion (PLIF) treatment is used to stabilize the lumbar spine. In PLIF procedure, small bone graft spacers are placed gently within the spine by moving the spinal nerves and neurologic structures.

Treatment

Treatment focuses on mend the bones in the lumbar spine. Intervertebral discs are removed and replaced with a bone spacer made of either metal or plastic. In this procedure, the spine is accessed through an incision made on the back. The lamina is removed and the nerves mobilized. The facet joints may be undercut to give the nerve roots more room. Then, the inserted bone is fitted into a cage and placed into the intervertebral space.
